Benefits of Epsom Salt Baths

Health Benefits of Epsom Salt Baths

What is Epsom salt?

Surprisingly, Epsom salt is not actually a salt.  It is a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate.  It got its name from a saline spring at Epsom in Surrey, England

Why is magnesium important?

Magnesium helps the body regulate 325 enzymes and plays a vital part in many bodily functions such as muscle control, energy production, and the elimination of harmful toxins. Unfortunately, the high content of fat, sugar, salt, and protein in the typical American diet depletes magnesium from our bodies causing a deficiency in many Americans. According to the National Academy of Sciences, American’s magnesium deficiency helps to account for high rates of heart disease, stroke, arthritis, osteoporosis, joint pain, digestive difficulties, stress-related illnesses, chronic fatigue and a number of other ailments.  Both magnesium and sulfate are absorbed through the skin, that’s why enjoying a hot bath with two cups of dissolved Epsom salt is an ideal way to soak up the numerous health benefits.

What are the health benefits of soaking in Epsom salts?

Stress relief is one of the greatest benefits of soaking in an Epsom salt bath after a long day or challenging workout.  Stress drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline.  As the Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin, it replenishes the level of magnesium in the body.  Magnesium helps to produce serotonin which is a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation.

Listed below are other health benefits of enjoying an Epsom salt bath 3-4 times a week for 20-40 minutes.

Eliminates toxins and heavy metals      from the body
            Relieves muscle pain and cramps
            Reduces swelling and inflammation
            Relieves constipation
            Improves circulatory health
            Improves absorption of nutrients
            Eases migraine headaches
            Relieves minor skin irritations
Promotes good skin, joint, and nervous system tissue

Please Note:  Avoid using soap because it will interfere with the action of the salts. As always, if you are pregnant or have any health concerns, consult with your doctor before using Epsom salt.
